IrriDesk is the new digital tool that combines the latest technologies in monitoring and simulating soils and crops, looking for the optimization of water use in agriculture.

The IrriDesk system, hosted in the cloud, is compatible with commercial irrigation controllers to which it autonomously update their irrigation schedules.

IrriDesk is based on an algorithm developed at IRTA which assimilated data from diverse information sources, such as

  • weather data
  • sensors installed in the soil or in plants
  • remote sensing
  • information facilitated by the farmer

IrriDesk is available to commercial farms embedded in other platforms of the irrigation ecosystem.

How does IrriDesk work

The process of managing irrigation with IrriDesk starts with…

Installing in the field the required hardware, both sensors and irrigation controllers. IrriDesk can interoperate through APIs with commercial platforms for sensor data acquisition, as well as with commercial irrigation controllers.

To manage precise irrigation on a given agronomic case, the farmer -or an agronomy consultant- must fill in some forms describing the site-specific properties of the crop, the soil and the irrigation setup.

Other forms will allow selecting a seasonal irrigation strategy, in accordance with the productive goals and constraints at that site. With all that information, IrriDesk proposes a seasonal irrigation plan, that the farmer can accept or modify at any moment

During the irrigation season, the daily work of IrriDesk includes importing sensor data, processing and assimilating them in digital twins of the irrigated plots, together with other information sources such as weather data. From those updated data IrriDesk makes the appropriate decisions to adjust irrigation.

Finally, IrriDesk sends, every day, updated prescriptions to the irrigation controllers, which adapt their schedules accordingly.

IrriDesk can work unattended and autonomously for an entire irrigation season. However, we recommend periodic supervision by the farmer, in order to detect and resolve as soon as possible the common incidences of any irrigation setup.
